TAKE CARE OF YOUR SHOES
Shoes from Apair is designed in Denmark and handmade by some of the finest artisans in Italy. Irregular shades of color are one of the hallmarks of natural leather and are a “stamp” of quality.
Love them and use them as a treat for your feet, but protect them from rain because leather is not waterproof. Let them rest sometimes and let them dry slowly in case they get in contact with water.
Remember leather needs protection and moisture. You will be able to use your beloved shoes longer if you take good care of them. Replace soles and heels in time and be good to details and sippers. Your shoes will love you for it.
On this page we will give you inspiration on how to treat your shoes and recommend which treatments and shoe care products we love ourselves.
We would like to give our customers the best opportunities to take good care of their shoes so they stay pretty for a long time.
What is so amazing about leather is that they can last forever and only be more beautiful as time pass if they are treated well.
BASIC TREATMENT
Loving treatment of our shoes starts before they are polished. Here you can read about some simple tips for treating both sneakers and leather shoes.
You should always treat your shoes with an impregnation spray before putting on your shoes for the first time. This protect them from dirt and moisture (this does not apply to sneakers and other non-leather shoes).
Change to a new pair of shoes every day, as they may become wet during the day and shoes need approx. 24 hours to dry.
Do not use shoe polish as a cleaning agent. First, remove the worst dirt with a cloth or brush.
Always use the most suitable treatment product for your shoes. If in doubt, contact your shoemaker.
If your shoes get soaked, never dry them on a radiator or similar. You risk the leather drying out and cracking.
TREATMENT OF LEATHER
Leather shoes are some of the most comfortable types of shoes one can wear as the leather adapts to the foot over time. Leather shoes also need a lot of care, but if you do it right, they will last forever without looking worn.
Cleaning. If the shoes are dirty, wipe them off with a slightly damp cloth. Do not use detergents and avoid making them too wet.
Take care of them. Use a shoe polish to care for them. Rub the cream into the leather with a cloth. Choose a cream that nourishes and softens the skin – preferably in a similar color to the shoe so that its color appears even more. Otherwise, a neutral-colored cream is ideal.
Polish. After the cream is applied, brush your shoes. For best results, use a soft shoe brush with natural horsehair.
TREATMENT OF OTHER TYPES OF LEATHER
Suede and nubuck. These types of leather can, in principle, be impregnated with a spray to make them water and soil resistant. If the accident happens, you can use a suede brush that brushes the skin up and therefore removes dirt and stains. There is also a variety of specialty products suitable for removing stains from delicate leather types. After such treatment, the shoe should be treated with impregnation again. Always use water on this type of leather shoe and, as far as possible, avoid wearing it when it is raining.
Patent leather shoes. These are leather shoes covered with gloss or foil. Therefore, the shoe can either be treated with impregnation spray or shoe polish. This type of leather can also be treated with oil. Apply the oil with a soft cloth and brush the shoe afterwards.
Snakeskin, metal and the like. This kind of shoe is rare and delicate. It is recommended that you get help from your shoemaker to treat this type. There are a wide range of specialty products that should be used. E.g. You can’t use regular shoe polish on snake and crocodile skin – here you need special care for reptiles.
TREATMENT OF LEATHER SOLES
Leather shoes have either a leather or rubber sole. Common to both is that they get worn out. As a general rule, a sole should be replaced when the rubber sole is worn down to 1mm. It is a good idea to put a rubber sole on the outside of a leather sole, as this shoe becomes even more waterproof.
